Meet Andrew Krenz

My wife, Kristine and I, moved to the Historic and Halloween districts on June 6, 2008 and have been growing roots ever since.  Now, our family includes three active and thoughtful kids [12,10,7] that attend Hillside and Amerman.

Today, I serve the residents of this City in three critical areas that impact our collective futures.

  • City Council Member :  I raised my hand, and was selected by Council, earlier this year after the capable Sam Ekong retired in term and have already been able to pull forward key experiences from my other functions to drive more strategic discussion on how we best deploy our finite resources for the benefit of our City.

  • Planning Commissioner:  Since 2018, I have served during a key time on Planning.  So far I have dedicated over 1,000 hours to initiatives that matter to all of us including, but not limited to...

    • Rewriting the Master Plan for The Northville Downs Development based on 2018 feedback and two surveys we authored

    • Floor Area Ratio as tool to balance our mix of new and historic neighborhoods

    • Driving for  safe standards and proper execution of Site Plans [sidewalks on Center Street]

    • Front Porch Design Incentives to cultivate neighbor to neighbor relationships

    • Performance Bond Guarantees for builders to make sure the work gets done

    • Pushing for amenities that attract our next generation of families to commit to Northville

  • Chairperson - Farmers Market Task Force:  I was appointed by the City Council in October of 2020 to lead a group of 15 of our volunteer neighbors in reimagining what the Farmers Market will need to look like in the future state as the current location is within the boundaries of The Downs.  We have been working diligently to make sure we have a plan and that this City doesn’t lose this gem!  We will present our findings to the City in September.

The Future is Electric…

Professionally, I have dedicated my career to design and engineering of a zero emission future with Vehicle Electrification as an Engineering leader on our next generation of EVs at General Motors.  Over this time I have also earned five patents in support of that goal.  My passion is to bring that Electrification experience forward to our community at this key point to support implementation of future infrastructure in our City.

I have also had the opportunity, while living abroad with our European division, to support an Engineering board dedicated to vehicle and pedestrian safety standards.  That has dovetailed into my passion to make Northville a leader in Walkability with street design ordinances and best practices, like “complete streets” that support that vision.  You can experience how important this if you walk the East side of Center Street north from town today.

Education and continual learning have also been foundational to who I am.  Currently, I hold an MBA from Indiana University for International Business, a Masters in Vehicle Engineering from Purdue University, and a Bachelors of Engineering in Materials Science from the University of Michigan.  Also, I read perpetually looking for new ideas or to burnish the ones I hold.  The latest being “Walkable City Rules” by Jeff Speck which includes many of the key principles that Planning is using to write a better plan for the Downs today!

To summarize, I am dedicated to serving my neighbors however I can.  With the record I have built so far as a parent, a volunteer, a commissioner, a council member, an engineer, and someone who hopes to be rooted in this special area for decades to come, you can expect me to protect what is intangibly special and take the long view toward a Sustainable City, Balanced Neighborhoods, and Engaging Neighbors.

Letter of Support from Mayor Turnbull

I have followed Andrew Krenz’s civic involvement including his time on Planning Commission these past three years when critical issues are being discussed for the future of all Northvillians.  ... because of his leadership, intellect, and thoughtfulness for the community we love I appointed him Chairperson of the Farmers Market Task Force supported by the City Council.

I have experienced Andrews’s service to the community through various initiatives. Andrew in my opinion, is looking at the future and is ready to assist to guide Northville’s next generation on a path and trajectory which will be beneficial to all citizens.

I have heard Andrew Krenz state “That the Future is Electric” in many aspects... bridging his professional, personal, and civic careers… he has been quoted as being a student of walkability and placemaking for the future of our town.

Tomorrow presents citizens with an exciting trajectory for the town we love. I have experienced Andrew Krenz’ passion in the committees that he has invested his time and talents on in this community.

We must all know where we have been, understand the challenges of today to project where we want to go in the future in this “Hamlet in the Hills or Switzerland of Wayne County”, we call Northville.

Andrew Krenz has proven his dedication, sharing his time and talents in other activities for the betterment of this community we love over these past few years.

Get to know Andrew yourself.

Keep that Northville Faith!

More from those who know Andrew…

“It gives me great pleasure to write a Letter of Nomination in support of Andrew Krenz for Northville City Council. Andrew serves as the Chair of the Northville Farmers Market Task Force and currently serves on the Northville Planning Commission and City Council. I met Andrew while serving on the Northville Farmers Market Task force. He has been a model, indeed an inspiration, in his service to the community. As chairman, he’s able to lead the task force effectively with intelligent, articulate and thoughtful communication. Andrew is someone who listens and is willing to have his own preconceived ideas challenged. Building consensus, Andrew has been able to pull the Farmers Market Task Force together to provide a high organized thorough investigation for the future of the Northville Farmers Market - rallying around the idea of wanting it to truly make Northville a better place for tomorrow. I strongly endorse Andrew Krenz without any reservations and encourage you to give him your most favorable consideration for Northville City Council – 2021 Election.”

“I met Andrew Krenz when he was appointed to the Planning Commission. He made a great first impression on me, and that impression only improved the more we worked together. He is pragmatic in the sense that he approaches issues as they affect the day-to-day and actual practice; he doesn’t go down the rabbit holes of theory or speculation. Andrew is well spoken and does not get emotional over issues with which he may not agree. He is openminded, intelligent, and has a sense of humor.

He continues to work on Planning and also has taken over the open seat on City Council. It is apparent that he has chosen this great city with a strong sense of community and highly rated schools in which to raise his young family and is willing to put the time in to maintain this and work to make it even better.”

Anne Smith

“I would like to strongly endorse Andrew Krenz for City Council of the City of Northville, MI. As a current member of both the City Council and the City Planning Commission, along with Leading the Farmers Market Task Force and a prior member of the Master Plan Subcommittee, Andrew is extremely well qualified to serve on our City Council.

I have had the opportunity to work with Andrew over many years on the Planning Commission and I have always found him to be a man of character and integrity. He is extremely knowledgeable and professional in his undertakings, but Andrew’s greatest characteristic is his ability to lead by an example.  His decisions have not always been agreed upon, but his strength is doing what is best for the overall city and the generation that will follow.”

Steven Kirk
Vice Chair, Northville Planning Commission
